Two new properties I explored this week were background-clip and text-fill-color which, allowed me to set images as background on text. The only negative is that you are limited to their selection. One benefit of using a Google web font is that you don’t have this issue because Google hosts the font and everyone has access to it. If you give no other options that the browser will default to Times New Roman or another serif font. We need to specify other similar fonts that might be installed so that the browser has other choices to fall back on.
If you choose to download and install a typeface (e.g., Calisto MT) there is the possibility that other users won’t have this font installed on their computer. Using a Font Stack for Downloaded Fonts font-family: “Calisto MT”, “Bookman Old Style”, Bookman, “Goudy Old Style”, Garamond, “Hoefler Text”, “Bitstream Charter”, Georgia, serif You can access the different weights by using numbers associate with each weight (e.g., Lato Thin would be font-weight: 100 ).
This meant that sites were overloaded with images which would slow down load times and the text contained in those images weren’t able to be read by a screen reader or gathered for SEO. Just a few short years ago developers didn’t have access to web fonts and sites were created using images of type anywhere a custom font was needed.
